EXPLORING ATLAS OPERATION MODEL III

Expected Result: It is expected that by actively participating the workshop participants will strengthen their strategic thinking and action in six dimensions:
  1. Understand managerial challenges in transforming parastatal (in-between) organizations
  2. Understand the changing nature of strategic resources and value network of ATLAS beyond 2006
  3. Clarify value capturing aspects of ATLAS Operation Model, pre and post 2007
  4. Refresh insights in managing strategic transformation and change
  5. Become inspired by experiencing Nordic/Baltic culture
  6. Become challenged by leadership-related exercises in nature.
Time and Venue:
August 31 through September 2, 2005, Villa Dalby/Oittaa Manor House, Espoo, Finland, Tallinn, Estonia, and on board “in-between”. A description of the proposed venue, optional outside activities, and Finnish Central Association for Recreational Sports and Outdoor Activities is attached.

    Afternoon flight from Geneva to Helsinki Accommodation at Villa Dalby, Espoo Welcoming Dinner with discussions with prominent Finnish multinational expert concerning recent trends in management of public/high tech organizations, e.g. Professor Jorma Routti, former CERN Council Member and Department Head at EU

  3. “Straddling In-Between: How Estonia and Estonian Institutions Coped With Transformational Challenges on Their Way From Soviet Block-Mode to EU-Mode”, Professor Jaak Leimann, Fr. Minister of Economy and Deputy Prime Minister. In his presentation, Prof. Leimann will address the following key points related to value network:
    - short description of the Soviet style planning system, its actors, decision-making environment
    - impact of external, unforeseen forces on the actor network
    - start of new thinking pattern, planning basis for the future
    - description of the change process from old to new system
    - experiences of difficulties encountered and resolved (role of new actors, management challenges)
    - remaining future challenges

  4. ATLAS Operation Model: Structures and Processes as Strategic Resources
    - presentation (current stage of ATLAS Operation Model is re-visited. Building on it dynamic role of strategic resources is explored within the context of implementing current and future core strategy)
    - teamwork (addressing questions related to ATLAS Operation issues, such as what are the resources available today; what new ones are needed; where will they come from; when and how are these resources acquired
    - discussion
    - lessons and conclusions

  6. From Theory to Practice: Field exercises deep in Finnforests and Lake Bodom instructed by professionals from Finnish Central Association for Recreational Sports. Purpose of the exercises:
    - to confront participants with new situations, how to solve them "on the spot";
    - to make participants able to communicate about abstract concepts efficiently without normally available aids;
    - to get accustomed with different management and leadership styles;
    - to identify the management/leadership styles of each member of the ATLAS team
  7. The Art of Concept Creation: “Envisioning New Arts Concepts”, Professor Seppo Kimanen, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and Chamberarts. In his presentation, Prof Kimanen will address the following key points related to strategic resources:
    - description of the envisioning process that results in a concrete music festival concept;
    - the role of the artists (experts) and the management;
    - description of the value generating chain or process
    - use and allocation of resources, networking

    Day 3: Friday, September 2, 2005

  8. Capturing Value of ATLAS Operation Model: Re-Designing Value Network, Now and Beyond
    - presentation (the role of key players in future ATLAS value network will be mapped out. Critical success factors of partnering will be presented. Elaborations of different Business/Operation Models will be presented as well for creating value-generating partnering strategies for ATLAS)
    - teamwork (addressing questions related to ATLAS Operation issues, such as what will the renewed value network be; what new competences are needed for managing the network; what is the contribution of new network partners)
    - action-oriented conclusions
  9. Making Strategic Transformation Happen (concrete frames and tools for making things happen will be presented. Culture and human side of organization will be pinpointed)
